In the Spotlight: Medical Service Vehicle Conversions

We are returning with our in the spotlight series over the next few months to give you a real insight into the specific conversions that we have to offer and to answer all of your conversion questions. To kick off the series, we will be taking a look at our medical service vehicle conversions.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the demand for our medical service vehicle conversions has skyrocketed, but what makes our conversions so different from other converters? The SCW team have come together to answer some of our most common questions to give you a full understanding into the bespoke Stanfords touch.

What makes Stanford’s medical service vehicle conversions so popular?

All of our vehicles are built to order, meaning that everything is entirely bespoke. Because of this, we can create a whole range of different conversions from single wheelchair capacity PTS vehicles and secure cell vehicles right up to frontline ambulances and mobile doctor’s clinics! A team of just two coachbuilders, along with the help of our on-site upholstery department, specialist vehicle electricians and climate technicians, convert each vehicle entirely from start to finish.

Our clients are given lots of flexibility and support from the SCW team when it comes to medical service vehicle design. We have a huge variety of interior layouts, trims and features to choose from and the team are always on hand to recommend the best options for you.

If I was to choose a Stanford Coachworks conversion, what could I expect in terms of the full build process?

After the initial enquiry, we firstly like to invite our clients to visit us at our site in Stanford le Hope and get a real feel for what we do. We have a number of seating options and components available to try and we always have multiple medical service vehicles, at different build stages, to take a look at.

The safety of passenger using our vehicles is a huge priority for us at Stanford Coachworks, so our team is dedicated to helping you design a specification which not only meets your requirements, but is at the forefront of safety. All of our conversions undergo either an IVA test or are built to strict NSSTA regulations upon completion. We also supply you with a copy of the certificate so that you know for sure that you’re in safe hands! Click here to get a full insight into our NSSTA process.

Once deciding on specification and the chassis has arrived on site, your vehicle can begin to go into build. We try to personalise this process as much as possible by inviting you to see your vehicle in build or by sending you regular photo / video updates.

What type of medical service vehicles can you complete and on what chassis?

Our main range of medical service vehicles includes frontline ambulances, PTS vehicles and secure cell conversions, however we do also work with our clients to produce specialist bespoke builds. Depending on what you need to use your vehicle for, we can convert a range of chassis from small to large.

Smaller conversions, which are usually based on Mercedes Vitos, Ford Tourneo Connects and other similar vehicles, can carry a single wheelchair, along with four other passengers, so are ideal for organisations based in busy communities who are looking to transport patients to / from appointments or between hospitals.

Mercedes Vito PTS conversions for an NHS hospital.

Larger vehicles, varying from medium to extra-long wheelbase chassis such as Mercedes Sprinters, Peugeot Boxers and Renault Masters, are preferred with organisations either transferring multiple patients, carrying a stretcher or transporting mental health patients. We have a lot more flexibility when converting larger vehicles due to the increased payload which allows for more medical equipment, passenger seating or secure cells.

Secure cell vehicle conversion.

For those looking for extra bespoke medical service vehicles, such as mobile clinics or medical command units, we would recommend a variety of extra-long wheelbase chassis with high payloads. This again allows additional space and weight for specialist equipment. If you’re really unsure as to what would work best for your organisation, speak to the team about what you’re looking to use your vehicle for and we can suggest the best option for you.

What sort of organisations use your medical service vehicle conversions?

Over the past 27 years, we have built an excellent reputation within the medical industry and our conversions are well-trusted by many clients within major London NHS hospitals, large private ambulance organisations, medical charities, local authorities and more. Most recently, we have converted a fleet of vehicles, consisting of PTS Toyota Corollas, Mercedes Vitos and L2H2 Mercedes Sprinters, for an NHS client.

Some of our more specialist conversions, including one converted for a long-term private ambulance client, featured a multi-patient mini hospital in the rear, a full surveillance office in the front with desks, monitors and a high-resolution camera mast to help seek out those in need of emergency medical treatment. Take a look at pages 16 & 17 of our latest interactive magazine here to find out more.

We also recently converted a full mobile doctor’s clinic for a fantastic medical charity which you can read all about on our news page by clicking here.
